Meet our New Castle High School and Middle School Instructional Coaches: Vicki Madison is an NC graduate and former NCHS Social Studies Teacher. Molly Bates is our former NCMS Math Teacher and Girls’ High School Basketball Coach. Heather Abernathy, previously serving at Burris Laboratory in Muncie, joined our staff this year.
Instructional coaches play a vital role in the educational environment, serving as the bridge between teachers, families, and students. Their primary mission within New Castle is to support the best education and welfare for children, ensuring that every student has the opportunity to succeed.
One of the key responsibilities of instructional coaches is to build trust with families. They act as friendly faces to parents, and create a welcoming environment. By being an extra person to connect with families, coaches help to better support them and their children. Mrs. Bates looks forward to seeing students and their families during the car duty throughout the year. This trust building is crucial as it bridges the gap between teachers and families, making sure that everyone is on the same page regarding the child's education.
Instructional coaches also provide consistent support and professional development for teachers. They offer constructive feedback and help teachers navigate the requirements and standards for the year. By breaking down silos and encouraging group collaboration, they foster a more cohesive and supportive teaching environment. Mrs. Madison assures teachers they are there to help, not evaluate, ensuring that teachers feel supported rather than judged. Instructional coaches work closely with teachers to develop and implement new curriculum. New Castle’s aim is to normalize the role of instructional coaches in the profession, advocating for every building in the state to have these resources.
